A farm box is a share that members join, not a product they buy once. Members choose how often they get it and how they get it, and pay each week or for the whole season. Each week, when changes close, every member’s box becomes an order in your dashboard, already paid and ready to pack.
Any store that isn’t a restaurant can sell farm boxes: farms, farmers markets, grocers, bakeries, butchers and shops.

Where to find it

In the business dashboard sidebar:
  • Sell → CSA boxes lists your boxes. Press New box to make one.
  • Customers → CSA members lists everyone who has joined, is waiting for a spot or has been invited.
Open a box to see its six tabs: This week, Harvest & pickup, Members, Waitlist, Updates and Seasons. Box settings at the top of the page opens the box’s settings.

How a week works

  1. Before changes close, members can change their box in the ways you allow: skip the week, swap items, add extras or donate the box. You post what’s in the box on the This week tab, or keep it a surprise.
  2. Two days before changes close, members get an email about the coming box, with your list if you posted one and a link to change their box.
  3. When changes close, the week is fixed. Members who pay each week are charged. Every box becomes an order in Order fulfillment, with a CSA filter so you can see them on their own.
  4. On box day, you pack the boxes from the Harvest & pickup tab. Members collect them in your pickup window, or you deliver them yourself. Tick each one off as it goes out.
You set when changes close: one to six days before the box day, at a time you choose. See Set up a box.

What members pay, and what you get

Members pay your box price. For each box they also pay a service fee of 5% of the box (never more than $6) plus $0.30, with GST and PST on that fee. The service fee goes to Local Pass, not to you. You’re paid the box price, any extras, your own delivery fee and any GST you charge on the box. Your Local Pass fee, and the GST and PST on it, come off. Each box is paid into your balance when its order is made, and goes out with your usual payouts. See Payouts for boxes.

Where members join

Members join on localpass.ca. Your box gets its own page there, with the price, how often it comes, your next box day, spots left and your policies. People can also join from your own website with the box widget. The Local Pass app shows boxes too, once boxes are switched on in the app. Signing up and managing a membership happen on localpass.ca. A box is never sold as a one-off. It doesn’t go in a cart, on an order sheet or in a catering order.

Payouts for boxes

What each box pays you, and when.
Local Pass connects you with members and handles their payments. You’re responsible for your own permits, licences, labels and tax. If you’re not sure whether to charge GST on your box, ask your accountant.
